Lean muscle tissue increases metabolism and, in turn, helps us burn more fat.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-16614\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fitfatherproject.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/sarcopenia-men.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"277\" height=\"259\" \/>It is so important, in our 40s, to do strength training exercises to maintain or increase our muscle mass.<\/p>\n<p>The old adage of \u2018use it or lose it\u2019 could not be more apt for this subject.<\/p>\n<p>Our lean muscle starts to deteriorate as we get into our 40s, and the only way to stop the effect is to train our muscles.<\/p>\n<p>Resistance exercises \u2014 whether that is bodyweight or with weights \u2014 are the way forward.<\/p>\n<h3>How do I do a Full Body Strength Training Routine?<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitfatherproject.com\/get-free-workout\/?utm_source=blog-post&utm_medium=text-link&utm_term=workout-routines-for-men-over-40&utm_content=&utm_campaign=ff30x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Full body strength training<\/a> is best done using movements that cover multiple muscle groups.<\/p>\n<p>Exercises like squats, deadlifts, clean and press, and pull-ups are the ones to go for. As you progress, you can even combine these.<\/p>\n<p>One of my favorite exercises is deadlift into clean and press. Get 15 of those bad boys out, and you\u2019ll be pumped! When it comes to workout routines for men over 40, this one covers all the bases.<\/p>\n<h3>What does a full-body strength workout look like?<\/h3>\n<p>Here's an example session for you to try out:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><u>Warm-up<\/u>: 5 minutes rower, skipping, cross-trainer, or similar<\/li>\n<li><u>Legs<\/u>: 3 x 10-12 squats (with a barbell or holding dumbbells\/kettle-bells)<\/li>\n<li><u>Back<\/u>: 3 x 10-12 rows (with barbell or dumbbell)<\/li>\n<li><u>Chest<\/u>: 3 x 10-12 dumbbell chest press (safer than a barbell for us older guys)<\/li>\n<li><u>Shoulders<\/u>: 3 x 10-12 dumbbell shoulder press<\/li>\n<li><u>Finisher<\/u>: 2 x 12 reps dumbbell deadlifts (keep your back upright and core tight)<\/li>\n<li><u>Cooldown<\/u>: 5 minutes treadmill or similar<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"su-note border-color border-style\"  style=\"border-color:#e1deb3;\"><div class=\"su-note-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\" style=\"background-color:#fbf8cd;border-color:#ffffff;color:#000000;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><u><strong>Pro Tip #1<\/strong><\/u>:<\/span> The last rep on each set should feel like the last one you can do. If you feel you could do two or more, then increase the weight on your next session.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3>What if I don't have access to weights?<\/h3>\n<p>If you don\u2019t have access to weights, you can still do a great full-body strength workout using bodyweight exercises like this one:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><u>Warm-up<\/u>: 5 minutes rower, skipping, cross-trainer, or similar<\/li>\n<li><u>Legs<\/u>: 3 x 45 seconds jump squats<\/li>\n<li><u>Back<\/u>: 3 x 10-12 pull-ups (or rows)<\/li>\n<li><u>Chest<\/u>: 3 x 15-25 push-ups<\/li>\n<li><u>Shoulders<\/u>: 3 x 15-25 incline push-ups (feet elevated)<\/li>\n<li><u>Cooldown<\/u>: 5 minutes walk outside<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"su-note border-color border-style\"  style=\"border-color:#e1deb3;\"><div class=\"su-note-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\" style=\"background-color:#fbf8cd;border-color:#ffffff;color:#000000;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><u><strong>Pro Tip #2<\/strong><\/u>:<\/span> With bodyweight exercises, when you can complete the prescribed number of reps we recommend, either increase the number of reps or add weight (holding a dumbbell between your feet for pull-ups).<\/div><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>This 40-minute full-body workout is great for strength training and optimizes your time with a superset workout plan!<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"video-responsive\"><iframe src=\" https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oVLxMiMyKqk?modestbranding=1&autohide=1&showinfo=0&controls=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h2>Workout 3 \u2013 Flexibility and Mobility<\/h2>\n<h3>Goal: To avoid injury and keep away aches and pains<\/h3>\n<p>We all know about the aches and pains, the stiff back, and the clicking ankles, don\u2019t we?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-17054\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fitfatherproject.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/flexibility-pain.jpg\" alt=\"flexibility-pain\" width=\"350\" height=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fitfatherproject.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/flexibility-pain.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.fitfatherproject.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/flexibility-pain-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>We are getting older, yes, but that doesn\u2019t mean we have to put up with aching joints and painful muscles. They can be fixed, believe it or not!<\/p>\n<p>Warming up well and stretching is a HUGE part of exercising. If you\u2019re not warming up before exercise, you\u2019re setting yourself up for pain, discomfort, and probably injury.<\/p>\n<p><u>Cold muscles don't like to be stretched<\/u>!<\/p>\n<p>The best example I ever heard during my PT training was about muscles being like taffy. If you pull cold taffy, what happens? <strong>It snaps.<\/strong> What happens if you pull warm taffy? <strong>It stretches.<\/strong> Think of your muscles as that taffy.<\/p>\n<h3>How do I do a flexibility and mobility routine?<\/h3>\n<p><u><strong>Before your workouts<\/strong><\/u>, I always recommend the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>3-5 minutes of light cardio warm-up (skipping, jumping jack, biking, or rowing)<\/li>\n<li>Foam rolling of parts of your body that feel tight (back, shoulders, legs).<\/li>\n<li>5 minutes of warm-up exercises for your shoulders, knees, and lower back.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u><strong>After your workouts<\/strong><\/u>, I recommend the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do 5 minutes of cool down on a treadmill or similar<\/li>\n<li>Static stretches held for 30 seconds for each muscle group you just exercised.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Focus on particular areas of discomfort, such as:<\/p>\n<p><u><strong>Lower back pain:<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p>Pain here would be eased by strengthening your core muscles and stretching your hamstrings, lower back, hip flexors, and gluteal muscles.<\/p>\n<p><u><strong>Knee pain:<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p>Pain in your knees, either during or after activity, would be helped by proper warm-up and mobility, as well as stretching your quad muscles.<\/p>\n<p><u><strong>Shoulder pain:<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p>Shoulder pain and roundness are usually caused by a tight chest and a weak back.
